Job description:

The Systems Administrator will sit in the Systems Administrators team, interacting with the IPOps, Openstack, Infrastructure, DevOps, Architectual and Engineering teams. You ll ensure the efficient management, optimization, and security of Linux-based systems, contributing to the stability, scalability, and reliability of the organization s IT infrastructure. Key responsibilities: System Maintenance and Configuration: Responsible for maintaining and configuring Linux servers, ensuring their proper functioning, updating software and firmware, managing user accounts, and monitoring system performance. Security and Compliance: Plays a critical role in ensuring the security of Linux systems by implementing security measures, such as access controls, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems, as well as staying up to date with security patches and conducting regular vulnerability assessments. They also ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry best practices. Troubleshooting, Issue Resolution AND Oncall Support: When issues arise, the administrator is responsible for diagnosing and resolving technical problems related to Linux systems, including network connectivity, server crashes, performance bottlenecks, and software configuration issues. They provide timely and effective troubleshooting to minimize downtime and maintain system availability. This is also provided Out of Hours thru an Oncall rota. Capacity Planning and Performance Optimization: The administrator monitors system performance, identifies areas of improvement, and conducts capacity planning to ensure the Linux infrastructure meets current and future demands. Backup and Disaster Recovery: Designs and implements backup strategies to ensure the integrity and availability of data on Linux systems. They establish disaster recovery procedures and regularly test backup and recovery processes to mitigate the impact of potential data loss or system failures. Collaboration: In addition to their technical responsibilities, role will collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as developers and network administrators, to ensure seamless integration of Linux systems with other IT infrastructure components. Key skills: Skill Detail Problem solving Server Performance Issues: Linux system administrators often encounter performance-related problems, such as high CPU or memory usage, slow response times, or network bottlenecks. Resolving these issues requires analysing system logs, monitoring tools, and performance metrics to identify the root cause, making informed decisions on resource allocation, tuning system configurations, optimizing code or queries, and implementing appropriate performance-enhancing techniques. Security Breaches and Intrusion Attempts: System administrators must stay vigilant against security breaches and potential intrusion attempts. They need to proactively monitor system logs for suspicious activities, analyse network traffic, apply security patches and updates, configure firewalls and access controls, and implement intrusion detection and prevention systems. Resolving security incidents requires quick and decisive action, critical thinking to assess the severity and impact of the breach, and making informed decisions to mitigate the vulnerabilities and prevent future incidents. Application Compatibility and Dependencies: Linux system administrators often deal with compatibility issues between applications and dependencies. They need to troubleshoot and resolve conflicts related to library versions, software dependencies, and system configurations. This requires analysing error logs, understanding the dependencies and their interactions, and making decisions on updating or modifying software versions, adjusting system configurations, or implementing workarounds to ensure smooth application operation. System Downtime and Service Disruptions: Unexpected system downtime or service disruptions can occur due to hardware failures, power outages, network issues, or software conflicts. Linux system administrators must respond promptly to restore services by diagnosing and fixing the underlying problems. This may involve critical thinking to identify the most efficient and effective resolution strategy, coordinating with hardware vendors or service providers, performing system backups and restores, and implementing redundancy measures to minimize future downtime. Data Loss and Recovery: In the event of data loss, system administrators need to employ critical thinking and judgment to assess the severity of the data loss, identify the potential causes, and execute recovery strategies. This may involve restoring data from backups, employing data recovery tools, or engaging external resources for specialized recovery processes. Administrators must also analyse the root cause of the data loss and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Resolving these issues requires a high level of judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Linux system administrators must be able to analyse complex systems, gather relevant information, identify patterns, and make informed decisions based on their expertise and experience. They need to consider multiple variables, assess risks, prioritize actions, and anticipate potential consequences to ensure effective and efficient problem resolution while minimizing the impact on system availability and security.
